When something harmful or irritating affects a part of your body, your body’s automatic response is to remove it. Inflammation is part of your body’s defensive response when it recognizes damaged cells, irritants, and pathogens, and begins to heal itself. Inflammation is part of the healing process.
Inflammation is uncomfortable, but inflammation is the true evidence that your body is beginning to heal itself. Your body’s inflammatory response shows that your body is beginning to heal itself from infections, wounds, and tissue damage.
Acute inflammation starts rapidly and becomes severe in a short space of time. Signs and symptoms are normally only present for a few days, but may persist for a few weeks in some cases.
Examples of acute inflammation include bronchitis, sore throat from a cold or flu, scratch or cut on the skin, high-intensity exercise, acute appendicitis, dermatitis, tonsillitis, infective meningitis, sinusitis, physical trauma.
The inflamed area is likely to be painful, especially when touched, because chemicals that stimulate nerve endings are released, making the area more sensitive. The inflamed area often becomes red, because the capillaries in the area are filled with more blood than usual. As more blood flows to the inflamed area, the skin becomes warmer to the touch. The buildup of fluid also causes swelling, and there may be some loss of function in the region of the inflammation.
When inflammation occurs deep inside the body, such as in an internal organ, only some of the signs may be noticeable. For example, some internal organs may not have sensory nerve endings nearby, so there will be no pain, such as in certain types of lung inflammation.
Symptoms of chronic inflammation show up in a different way. Some symptoms include fatigue, mouth sores, chest pain, abdominal pain, fever, rash, and joint pain. Sometimes, inflammation can persist longer than necessary, causing more harm than benefit.
Some foods, including olive oil, tomatoes, nuts, such as walnuts and almonds, leafy greens, including spinach and kale, fatty fish, such as salmon and mackerel, fruit, including blueberries and oranges, help reduce inflammation.
Some foods, such as fried foods, including French fries, white bread, pastry, and other foods that contain refined carbohydrates, soda and sugary drinks, red meat, margarine and lard, aggravate inflammation.
